Alma Football Loses Tough Battle Against the Huskies

The Alma football team traveled to Almena, Kansas to play the Huskies of Northern Valley High School. Alma started off the scoring for the game with Ehren Smolik scoring a touchdown. Northern Valley answered back scoring the touchdown and the two-point conversion to give the Huskies the 8-6 lead heading into the second quarter. Daylan Russel launched a 39-yard pass to Nathan Hock to give the Cardinals a 14-8 lead over the Huskies. The Huskies responded tying the game at 14 apiece. To finish the quarter Daylan Russel had a 46-yard touchdown return to give the Cardinals a 22-14 lead heading into halftime. To start the second half of play Tyson McCurdy caught a 39-yard pass from Russell and converted the extra two points to extend the Cardinals lead to 14. Northern Valley finished the scoring for the third quarter scoring back to back touchdown to edge the Cardinals lead to 2. The score after 3 quarters of play was 28-26. Scoring for the final quarter was evened out with both teams scoring two touchdowns apiece to send the game into overtime with 42 a piece. With the game in overtime, both teams got the ball on the 10-yard line. Northern Valley got the ball first and scored the touchdown and the two-point conversion. Alma got the ball with the chance to tie the game. On Alma’s first drive Russell ran the ball for a 10-yard touchdown. With the chance to tie the game Russell got stopped on the line of scrimmage to give the Huskies the 50-48 win over the Cardinals.

Russell threw for 111 yards and rushed for 115. Tyson McCurdy rushed for 94 yards on 11 attempts. Ehren Smolik received for41 yards on 4 attempts. The Cardinals will be back in action Friday, September 7th at Shelton.
