Alma Loses Against a High Scoring Elm Creek Team

The Alma Football team played Elm Creek Buffaloes on Friday the 13th.  It was a cool night for a high scoring football game.  This would be the last home regular season game for seniors on the football team.  Alma would struggle offensively to get the ball in the end zone and turned the ball over 3 times.  Elm Creek seemed to be firing on all cylinders in the first half and scored 6 times. Alma had a good 4th quarter but was not able to overcome the first quarter deficit.

The first quarter was a high scoring affair by the Buffaloes.  Devon Walker had a great start to the game by scoring two rushing touchdowns in the 2:21 of the game.  The first touchdown was a 1 yeard run and the second a 7-yard run.  Both of the extra points were good for two points.  Anthony Quintia grabbed a 32-yard pass from Preston Walker to put the Buffaloes ahead 22-0.  Devon Walker would score again with 4:15 left in the quarter with an 11-yard run to put bring the lead to 30-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The seond quarter was more Elm Creek’s high powered offense.  They scored two more touchdowns.  One by Devon Walker on a 16 yard run and one from Preston Walker on a 65-yard run.  Alma was able to get a touchdown on the board with :40 left before half.  Daylan Russell caught a 13-yard pass from Burke Boehler.  This made the score 46-6 at the half.

Our halftime was full of entertainment from the Mini Cheer camp hosted by the Alma Cheerleaders.  Students K-6 danced and cheered routines they had learned on Friday afternoon.  The Junior High Band also marched for us during the halftime.

The Third quarter was a low scoring affair with the only touchdown coming from Preston Walker and a 32-yard run.  This made the score at the end of the third quarter 54-6.

The fourth quarter saw Alma with some offensive scoring.   Burke Boehler scored to start the quarter with a 12-yard run.  Elm Creek answered that touchdown with one of their own from Koby Smith on a 9-yard run.  Jared Asche scored the final points of the game with 1:03 left on the clock with a 9-yard run.  This made the final score 20-62.

The Alma defense was lead by Burke Boehler with 8 tackles.  He was followed by Daylan Russell, Tyson McCurdy and Joseph Felix with 6 tackles each.  Cooper Wright had 1 tackle for a loss and Daylan Russell had one fumble recovery.  The Cardinals return to action in Bartley against the Southwest Roughriders.  The game is on Thursday, October 19th at 7:00.
