Cardinals Get Runner-Up at Silver Lake Holiday Tournament

Alma Lady Cardinals traveled to Roseland to participate in the Silver Lake Holiday Tournament. The Cardinals first took on the Mustangs of Silver Lake High School. Alma got the victory in overtime 31-30.

Both teams started off with a slow start scoring less than 10 points in the first quarter. With a slow first quarter, Alma responded in the second quarter outscoring the Mustangs 11-7 to give the Cardinals a 19-13 lead heading into halftime. The Mustangs responded back outscoring the Cardinals in both the third and fourth quarters to tie the game at 25. Alma was here to win and wasn’t going to let the Mustangs advance to the ship. With five seconds left in overtime, the Cardinals were down 30-28 and needed a bucket. The Cardinals turned to Senior Maddie Brugh to convert on an out of bounds play to give the Cardinals the victory and the win. Brugh who had been cold from around the arc all night made the basket when it counted giving the Cardinals a 31-30 lead with no time left on the clock.

Maddie Brugh led the Cardinals in scoring with 10 followed by Tiffany Wells with nine, Dakota Hughes and Shiann Spady with four, and Abby Cervera and Teagan White with two. Shiann Spady pulled down eight rebounds in the Victory. Maddie Brugh had seven steals.

With the win, the Cardinals advanced to the Championship to play the 9-1 Timberwolves of Exeter-Milligan High School. An experienced Exeter-Milligan team gave the Alma Lady Cardinals run for their money outscoring the Cardinals in the first half 37-18. The Timberwolves proved to be too much for the Cardinals as they went on to win 63-43 to take home the championship plaque. With the loss, the Cardinals places second in the Holiday Tournament. Maddie Brugh led all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Dakota Hughes had five steals in the loss.
