Jesus Felix Earns a Spot at State Wrestling

The Alma Wrestlers headed to Amherst over the weekend for the D3 District tournament. Josh Mapes who had continued to improve each week this year was unable to get a win. Thanks for all your efforts this year! Kyle Johnson went 1-2 with a 15-7 win over Riley Ritner of (WIlcox-Hildreth). Kyle ended the season with a 13-30 record, 5 pins, 20 takedowns, and 21 escapes. Tyson McCurdy went 2-2 with two pins on the day but lost a close match in the heart break round to Colten Ratkovec (East Butler) 2-6. Ratkovec went on to place 4th when he was beaten by Conner Banzhaf (Cambridge) whom Tyson lost to in the quarterfinal round 2-6. Tyson finished the season with a record of 28-20 with 12 pins, 34 takedowns, 17 reversals, and 34 escapes (which is second for season high). Joseph Felix went 1-2 with a pin. Joseph’s record this year was 27-20 with the team high of 20 pins, 28 takedowns, 16 escapes, and 15 reversals. Hector Lugo had a great tournament going 2-2 with two pins. He lost to Trace Doyle (Cambridge) 2-8 in the heart break round but wrestled his best matches all season. Hector’s record, 16-20 with 12 pins, 20 takedowns, and 13 reversals. Mitchel Gehrig went 0-2 but showed great improvement this season and ended with an 11-18 record with 8 pins and 16 takedowns. The teams lone senior, Jesus Felix, was able to go 2-2, placing 4th when he lost to Dietric Kenning (Thayer Central) 1-3, but Jesus was able to earn himself a spot at the State Tournament! Being fourth is a tough spot to be Jesus will face Cooper Smith (Tri-County) in the first round on Thursday. Going into the State Tournament Jesus has a record of 28-16 with 18 pins, 21 takedowns, 23 escapes, and 17 reversals.
